In Don Det, and to a lesser extent in Don Khon, it appeared as if a deluge of guesthouses had rained down on the islands covering the local fishing villages. I am not a huge fan of places like Pai, and now Don Det, where tourists severely outnumber the local population. Visiting places like this are uncomfortable for me. It’s near to impossible to learn anything about the local culture because the majority of people you are interacting with are tourists themselves and the majority of locals you do interact with are all in the service industry so there is little chance of making much of a connection. How can one feel like they visited a place if they haven’t made a connection with that place?
Am I sounding grumpy? I’m a bit homesick. I am missing my connections now. I miss my community. The good news is that I’ll be flying back to California in mid April for about a month long visit. Just in time for the Youth Day parade!!
