It’s hard for me to remember exactly when/how I made the decision to start a RTW trip. Likely it happened somewhere between San Gerardo de Dota and Monteverde. Since making that decision I have changed my mind weekly, if not daily, in regard to my travel plan.
My pre-RTW plan was to hike the Camino de Santiago this May/June to enjoy spring in Spain.
My first RTW itinerary was still based on my desire to hike the Camino. Then I started to budget for 5 months in Europe. Holy smokes, what a budget buster!!

Next, this version that I sent out to family and friends as I started to plan my US road trip: I am starting with a 4 month road trip around the US, then 5 months in Central America, 4 months in South America, 2 months in Africa and then ??? This was based largely my desire to learn more Spanish and from reading Lonely Planet’s Central America on a shoestring cover to cover.

After reading a bazillion more travel blogs about budget friendly SE Asia, I decided to buy LP’s SE Asia on a shoestring and was hooked. My current “plan”: a 3 month US road trip followed by a one way flight to Thailand, leaving in early August.
My one constant: sunshine. I am chasing summer across Australasia.
