It likely stems from my love for tiny houses, but even more than the temples, I like checking out the spirit houses that are positioned in front of homes and businesses throughout northern Thailand. A spirit house is a shrine to the protective spirit of a place and are common in the Southeastern Asian countries of Myanmar, Cambodia, Laos, and Thailand.
One of the first spirit houses to catch my attention- near the hot springs outside of Pai
I like then contrast between the dark weathered wood and the bright, showy fake flowers- Prilpai Organic Home, Pai
This unmaintained spirit house is home to many wasps and is hauntingly beautiful- near the Buddha in the rice field, Pai
Large and elaborate spirit house outside of a bakery -Southern Old City, Chiang Mai
Though this is not a spirit house, I like the simplicity of this small shrine- Yellow Moon, Pai
