In mid July I will be going to Nepal for 5 weeks to help All Hands Volunteers with the rebuild efforts in Kathmandu.
I first heard about All Hands Volunteers (AHV) through Shannon O’Donnells The Volunteer Traveler’s Handbook and have been following their work in the Phillipines, Malawi, Vanuatu, and stateside for close to a year via Facebook and their website. As part of the donation challenge I did in May I made a donation to AHV after the first earthquake to help with immediate relief. Just days before the second quake shook Nepal I had decided to give up my daily donation challenge and had donated the rest of the months money all to AHV.
I’m not sure why, but the earthquake in Nepal hit me in the heart in a way that no other natural disaster has. Though I had made a financial contribution to the response work in Nepal I didn’t feel like it was enough and throughout the last two months my mind has kept going back to the people of Nepal. For the first time I am in a position where I can not only provide financial support, but can also help physically. At around midnight a few nights back, after talking things through with Tee, I shot off a volunteer application asking All Hands Volunteers if they needed help soon. Soon as in 2 weeks from then. I used to coordinate volunteers and volunteer events and I felt like I was being a quite unreasonable by asking if they had space for me so soon, considering I’d need almost an immediate response in order to have time to get everything sorted. Well, AHV works quickly. Less than two days later they offered me a spot and by the next afternoon I had my flights and insurance sorted, vaccines administered, and gear purchased. I am ready to get my hands dirty for a good cause.
Now how can you get involved?
In addition to volunteering, I am raising money for the recovery efforts in Nepal. All the money we raise goes directly to covering the costs of materials, tools, and equipment for the rebuild efforts and food and water for the volunteers. I have started a fundraising page and my goal is to raise $2,000 for Project Nepal before I arrive in Kathmandu next week.

I will also keep you all updated on our work through FB and hopefully this blog too.
Many thanks in advance.
