Yesterday morning 4 sleepy hikers met up at Chiang Mai Train station to catch the 6:30 am train to Khun Tan (15 baht 3rd class). Unfortunately 1 forgot his passport and couldn’t continue with us. We arrived in Khun Tan about an hour later after watching the sunrise from the train. The National Park is directly across the tracks from the train station and the entrance is about 1.5 km up the hill. After checking in (100 baht) we hiked up the park road for 2 km past many bungalows and lodges that the park rents out.
Now we had reached the entrance to the nature trail. 5 km up through the forest and many flora and fauna photos later we reached the summit. After enjoying the view and napping in the sun awhile we came down a lesser developed trail to a small waterfall and through bamboo forests. Next came dinner at the train station and a little waiting to catch the 6:30 pm (50 baht 2nd class) train. All in all a easy day trip from Chiang Mai, nice valley views, and 16 km of quiet hiking trails that we had almost all to ourselves.
This hike can be done solo, but we did run into one territorial dog about 2 km up the nature trail and I was very happy I was not alone. I did this hike as an extension of Doi Suthep Walkers. For more hikes in the Chiang Mai area join their FB group.
Thanks Pat and Ines for putting up with my slow pokey self as I was trying out my new camera.
If anyone has any questions about doing this day trip to Doi Khun Tan just leave me a message.
