One of my favorite parts of living on the Melamchi base was our day off tradition called Saturday Feast. Saturday Feast is exactly what it sounds like. On our day off we all chipped in money and time and created a huge feast for dinner. The menus were incredibly creative, the company was always great, and it was fun to work together on a something that didn’t involve rocks or mud.
While I was in residence Rhys was the mastermind behind the feasts and cooked up incredibly varied and protein rich dishes like quiche lorraine, poutine, and an entire roasted pig. Yep, the first time I tried poutine was in rural Nepal, complete with stewed buffalo and homemade buffalo cheese. Nick created many veggie delights, like out of this world beans salads and kimchi that were marriage proposal worthy and others whipped up pies, breads, and much more. Everyone else pitched in by helping with the shopping, chopping, or dishes. It was like a family holiday without any of the stress or mess.
I hope this tradition is still going strong in Melamchi because it is a wonderful way to spend the day.
