This year I had the idea of doing a food tour in my favorite town for my birthday, but Tee and I had some things keeping us in Chiang Mai. So I decided to check off one of the trips I’d been eyeballing for awhile, river rafting, and because it was the rainy season it was the perfect time to go. I am not a strong swimmer so I was a little nervous, but after doing my research I felt like I’d be in good hands with 8 Adventures.
I got paired up with a drunk Brit who hadn’t gone to sleep the night before and while she was a hoot I was a little worried about her either falling out of the raft or hitting me in the face with her unsecured paddle when we went over the rapids. She also never seemed to hear the instructions from the guide so she was didn’t responding to their commands to paddle, or duck, or to stop. I know enough Thai to tell them she was drunk and then took it upon myself to repeat, almost yelling, the commands to her. She’d react and paddle or whatever for about 5 seconds before she forgot what was going on again. It made for an interesting morning, but 8 Adventure did a solid job keeping us safe. They had white-water kayakers check out the path through the rapids and spotters on shore when we went over the rapids in case anyone fell out, no one did on this trip, but one of my cousins fell out during our trip the next week and they were pulling her to shore before we all realized she’d was out of the raft.
Next rafting adventure, rafting the Pai River to Mae Hong Son.
